KUWAIT CITY, Sept 25: Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major-General Fahd Al-Shuwea has confirmed more than 100,000 Asian domestic workers hold driving licences, reports Al-Rai daily.

He said these people obtained the licences before the Ministerial Decree No. 5598/2014, was issued which specifies the categories of professionals who are eligible to obtain the driving licences.

The decree also states the driving licence will be linked to the validity of the residence permit and certain licences can be withdrawn following the change in profession. Al-Shuwea said the Asians took advantage of the easy conditions for obtaining drivers’ licenses which are valid for 10 years and then changed their professions and the sponsors.

He added, there is no legal justification to withdraw the licences now except in the case of violation of the residence law and following their deportation from the country.
