32 Fishermen Arrested in Indonesia Sent Back to PH

MANILA – Thirty-two Filipino fishermen were repatriated from Indonesia in accordance with the country’s anti-illegal fishing policy, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.

The Immigration Detention House of Manado, Indonesia also informed Consul General Oscar Orcine that they will repatriate 22 more Filipinos in May, added the press statement from the DFA.

The Indonesian government created its Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force in 2015 as part of its strict implementation of its anti-illegal fishing policy.

In line with this, the Philippine post recommended that there be information campaign, urging fishing boat owners to “discontinue the dispatch of fishing vessels crossing into Indonesian waters.”

Just this year, the Consulate General in Manado has repatriated a total of 217 Filipino fishermen apprehended in Indonesia, according to the DFA statement.
