Canada’s First Filipino Senator Meets Pinoy Community

ALBERTA – For the first time in Canada’s history, a lawmaker of Filipino descent sits in the Senate.

The Senator gave assurances to Filipinos despite the economic downturn in Alberta.

It was the first visit of Senator Tobias “Jun” Enverga to Red Deer, Alberta. Dozens of Filipinos greeted the first-ever senator in Canada of Filipino descent.

Enverga downplayed the issue on the economic downturn in Alberta due to the oil slump.

“Hindi pa naman talaga naghihirap ang Alberta. We know that everything that is happening right now, we know they’re just temporary,” Enverga said.

Enverga said there are various industries to fill the workforce.

“Everytime po na mayroon kaming kausap in various industries, wala po silang hinihiling sa amin kung di ‘we need temporary workers’,” he said.

Still, Enverga praised and encouraged Pinoys for their hard work and great contribution to Canada.

“Ang Filipino temporary workers po dito ay more than 40,000,” he said.
