DFA Urges Probe on Death of Saudi Hit-And-Run Victim

MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs is asking authorities in Saudi Arabia to investigate a hit-and-run, which resulted in the death of an overseas Filipino worker last June 12.

“We extend our deepest sympathy with the family of our kababayan who died a few days ago from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Jeddah,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said in a statement.

The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah wants the June 12 incident investigated thoroughly following allegations of negligence on the part of the OFW’s employer.

Consul General Edgar Badajos said the victim, a 51-year old construction worker from Butuan City, was immediately brought to a hospital where he died from his injuries four days later.

Badajos said the Consulate will make inquiries with the hospital to determine if the employer extended all possible assistance to keep him alive.

Meanwhile, the DFA pledged to assist the family in repatriating the OFW’s remains.
