DOH: Top 12 Tips to Fight Stress

With work troubles, pressing financial problems and the idea of being away from one’s family, an overseas Filipino worker is certainly exposed to a lot of stress.

The recently concluded National Mental Health Week in the Philippines reminds everyone to keep his or her mental health in check.

According to Medline Plus, chronic stress is a factor for both physical and mental illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes and depression.

The Department of Health released “12S” tips to help Filipinos be relieved of stress.

  1.       Self-awareness: Be sensitive to your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
  2.       Scheduling: Manage your time well.
  3.       Siesta: Take short breaks to improve your productivity.
  4.       Speak to me: Share your feelings with someone else.
  5.       Sounds and songs: Listen to feel-good music.
  6.       Sensation techniques: Get a massage to loosen tense muscles.
  7.       Stretching: Move your body to increase your oxygen supply.
  8.       Socials: Join other people in doing productive activities.
  9.       Smile: Smile to calm yourself and make others happy.
  10.       Sports: Engage in physical activities with other people.
  11.       Stress debriefing: Talk to counsellors in a brief crisis intervention.
  12.       Spirituality: Pray for five to 10 minutes a day.
