Ethiopian Held Running Bogus Office, Sheltering Housemaids – Saudi Caught Stealing Power Cables

KUWAIT CITY, July 17: Personnel from the General Department of Residence Affairs have arrested an Ethiopian man for running a bogus domestic labor office and for sheltering runaway housemaids, reports Al-Anba daily quoting the General Department of Public Relations and Security Media of the Ministry of Interior. The daily added, the security authorities acting on a tip-off set a trap for the man and caught him red-handed while ‘selling’ a maid for KD 200 to a police agent. Police records showed this maid was reported absconding by her employer. Police also seized from the man two runaway maids — an Ethiopian and a Sri Lankan — and referred them to the authorities. The Ethiopian housemaid then attempted to bribe the police officer with an offer of KD 800 to release her and her friend, but the offer was turned down and documented. The Interior Ministry has warned Kuwaitis and residents against dealing with such phantom offices that advertize their services via the social networking websites.
Betel leaves seized: An Ethiopian woman was arrested at Kuwait International Airport in possession of three kilograms of betel leaves. According to sources, customs officers were checking the luggage of passengers who arrived from an African country when they found three kilograms of betel leaves in the luggage of an Ethiopian woman. When they questioned her, she revealed that she was planning to sell them in Kuwait. She was referred with the confiscated betel leaves to the General Department for Drug Control for necessary legal action.
Cable thieves nabbed: A Saudi man and another unidentified person were arrested for stealing electric cables in the latest crackdown carried out by a security team from the General Criminal Investigation Department. In a press statement, the Public Relations and Security Department in the Interior Ministry revealed the crackdown is in line with ongoing efforts to stop the stealing of electric cables and poles under the supervision of Assistant Undersecretary for Criminal Security Affairs Major General Abdulhameed Al-Awadi.
Director of Criminal Security Department Major General Mahmoud Al-Tabbakh is closely following up the ongoing operations to arrest all those who steal electric cables and poles. During the recent crackdown, the security officers noticed a vehicle without a plate number and then they saw the driver, a Saudi man, cutting electric cables. Upon sensing police presence, the man sped off but a hot chase ensued leading to his arrest.
The officers then searched the car where they found tools for cutting electric cables and another man who fled to a nearby farm. After obtaining permission, the officers combed the farm but they failed to find the suspect who was arrested later in Sulaibikhat. The officers discovered the man has been involved in other crimes besides stealing. When subjected to interrogation, he admitted the crime and told the investigators that he owns the car and the confiscated tools. He added the stolen items are usually sold in the scrapyard.
