Baldoz Nixes FDH Hiring in HK for Work in Turkey

By Philip C. Tubeza

LABOR Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz has warned against the recruitment in Hong Kong of Filipino domestic helpers for work in Turkey.

In a letter to Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, Baldoz said only employment agencies accredited by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) can recruit Filipino domestic workers for work abroad.

Baldoz said the Philippine Consulate General should inform the Turkish consulate in Hong Kong about this stringent requirement.

“On the reported recruitment of Filipino workers, the DFA through the PCG Hong Kong could make representation with the Turkish Consulate that only POEA accredited/license recruitment agency must be involved in the recruitment of (domestic workers) bound for Turkey,” Baldoz said.

“It is also recommended that the PCG launch an information campaign to warn OFWs about the possible consequences of engaging the services of recruitment agencies like Artellect and applying for a visa to work as (domestic workers) in Turkey,” she added.

Labor Attache Nenita Garcia earlier said that the Labour Department was investigating the hiring of Filipina domestic worker here in Hong Kong for Turkey after one helper said she paid HK$19,000 for a job in Turkey but was fired after only 45 days.

“Ni-report lang namin sa kanila and they said they will look into it—kung licensed ba talaga yung agency; ano ang kanilang ginagawa; at magkano ang kanilang placement fee,” Garcia said.

She said the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Hong Kong had not verified any job order for Turkey.

Garcia said they had also raised the issue during a meeting with officials from the Turkish consulate.
