A 41-year-old Filipino domestic worker was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of stealing cash that her employer had stashed in his apartment in Kowloon Tong.

At 10pm, a 50-year-old man reported to Hong Kong police that he could not find the equivalent of around US$25,600 in cash he had stored in his home at Phoenix Court on Broadcast Drive, Sing Tao Daily reported. The cash included Hong Kong and foreign currencies.

It was understood that the maid had suddenly claimed she needed to attend to an urgent matter at home in the Philippines and asked her boss to buy her an air ticket, Apple Daily reported.

Feeling suspicious, the woman’s employer checked a drawer of the dining table where the cash should have been, and it was gone.

He suspected that his domestic worker had stolen the money, and he called the police.

After an initial investigation, police arrested the maid on suspicion of theft. Kowloon City Police Station is following up the case.
