Manila Renews Call for OFWs to Leave Yemen

2015-0302 Manila Renews Call for OFWs to Leave Yemen

The Philippine Embassy has called upon all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Yemen to evacuate the country due to the worsening political situation. “The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has raised the Alert Level to ‘4’.

The political and security situation is deteriorating and, therefore, the 750 OFWs currently working there are urged to leave,” Ambassador Ezzedin H. Tago said.

Earlier, he visited Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, to see for himself the situation in the country and subsequently urged the Filipino community there to evacuate. Despite these calls, Tago noted that the OFWs had a lukewarm response to the calls for them to leave the country.

He added that the Philippine government will shoulder the one-way airfare and payment of immigration penalties of OFWs requiring assistance and those who are subject to other applicable procedures arising from their evacuation.

The embassy also advised concerned OFWs to log on to the embassy’s website at www.riyadhpe.dfa.gov.ph for more information.
