MAKKAH — Citizens and expatriates are complaining against the sudden hike in parking fees in the central area around the Grand Mosque by about 25 percent.

Now parking fees per hour range between SR15 and SR20 as opposed to earlier SR10 an hour, local daily Al-Madina quoted visitors as saying on Wednesday.
They said that parking fees were increased without any previous notice.

Ali Mubarak Al-Alani, a Saudi, said he was surprised to find that the paid parking in the Ajyad parking lot has been increased to SR20 an hour. “This was done by the investor without adding any new service,” he said.

Both the Makkah Municipality and the Traffic Department have denied any role in increasing parking fees.

Ali Al-Suwaihri, a Saudi medical doctor, called for the creation of a special body to monitor companies managing parking lots.

“Parking fee per hour was SR10 which was increased to SR15 and now to SR20 without anyone to check the monopoly of operating companies,” he said.

Spokesman of the traffic department Col. Fawzi Al-Ansari said his department is not responsible for supervising parking lots or deciding their charges.

Spokesman of the municipality Osama Zaitouni said the municipality has no hand in supervising parking lots in the central area around the Grand Mosque.
