PH, Indonesia to Discuss Veloso’s Case – DFA

MANILA – Philippine authorities are set to meet with Indonesian officials on Wednesday to discuss developments in the case of Filipina convicted drug trafficker, Mary Jane Veloso.

Officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) will be meeting with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the Attorney General’s Office to talk about the cases filed by the Philippines against the recruiters of Veloso.

“This is part of the DFA’s continuous commitment to provide assistance to Mary Jane Veloso,” the DFA said.

They will also discuss the assistance available under the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Among Like-Minded ASEAN Member Countries (ASEAN MLAT),” the DFA said in a statement.

Veloso was nabbed by authorities at the Yogyakarta airport after they found 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her suitcase in 2010.

The mother of two was convicted and sentenced to die by firing squad in Indonesia last April 29, but was given an 11th-hour reprieve.
