For Pinoys in Dubai, Another Reason to Buy New Clothes

Filipinos in Dubai may be perceived as fashionable, with their on-trend pieces of apparel often brandished in their online profiles.

Keith Pereña in a Khaleej Times report explained this behavior of Filipino expatriates in the emirate.

“While we do splurge on Louis Vuitton bags or Nike shoes, you can’t deny that after a hard day’s work we deserve something new to add to our collection,” wrote Pereña.

“It’s our little way of rewarding ourselves after an honest day’s work,” he added.

But here’s some good news for Filipino expatriates in Dubai itching to buy that new short or dress.

Dubai’s apparel and footwear market was valued at $11.5 billion in 2016, an amount that is sure to be an economic growth driver for the city.

Clothing and footwear top Dubai’s retail sector sales, the Arabian Business said based on a report by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Apparel cornered 73% of the market share in the retail industry, while footwear followed at 18%.

The report was released during the 11th World Retail Congress, the Arabian Business said.

“The report said demand within this segment was supported last year by value and mid-range offerings by retailers, particularly during shopping festivals and sales events,” it added.

Quoting the chamber’s report, it said “this trend is expected to continue through 2021.”

The category is expected to “achieve a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4 percent in the medium term.”

Dubai Chamber President and CEO Hamad Buamim cited tourism among the key trends that drives up apparel sales in the emirate.

“The easing of UAE visa regulations to some countries is expected to drive tourism, which will likely have a positive impact on the Dubai’s retail market going forward as the emirate prepares to attract up to 20 million tourists annually by 2020,” Buamim was quoted as saying.

In the Middle East and the North African region, the UAE is considered the most competitive country in terms of travel and tourism. It’s also the second most secure destination in the world this 2017, according to the World Economic Forum.
