MANILA – All Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLO) worldwide are on alert for the possible spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said over the weekend that POLOs are closely monitoring the situation in their areas of jurisdiction, so that appropriate action can be taken in case of MERS-CoV outbreak.

POLOs were also directed to remind Filipino workers to be vigilant against MERS-CoV.

“We have to remind Filipinos all over the world to take preventive measures because other countries are also reporting cases of the deadly virus,” Baldoz said in an interview.

Baldoz noted that the MERS-CoV outbreak first occurred in the Middle East, but the infection has spread to other countries employing Filipinos like Thailand and South Korea, as well as parts of Europe and the Americas.

Currently, no Filipino worker in South Korea and Saudi Arabia is afflicted with MERS-CoV.
