WATCH | By Making P50 Bills ‘Invisible,’ Pinay Saved Over P40K in 5 Months

MANILA, Philippines – The willpower and ingenuity of a young Filipino woman to save money by reducing her expenses to bare necessities have earned her plaudits from thousands of netizens.

In just five months, Yona Abella was able to raise P42,300 (about $840) by saving 846 pieces of P50 bills.

How did she do it? Abella said she considered all the P50 bills that came into her hands as non-existent.

If for instance she bought something and received a change of P200 consisting of four P50 bills, she would regard the money as “invisible.”

“5mos ko po na save tong 846 pcs ng 50’s ganito ang aking ginawa, LAHAT NG 50 pesos na mahahawakan ko ay invisible MUNA sakin it means di ko siya gagastusin for example nag bayad ka ng buong 500 pesos then ang sinukli sayo 4 na 50’s , yung 4pcs na 50’s dapat invisible sakin hindi ko siya pwedeng gastusin. kailangan yung remaining na sinukli na hindi 50’s yung lang gagastusin at pagkakasyahin ko,” explained Abella.

She added that being able to restrain her impulses to buy things she wanted but did not need had helped her save continuously.

“Hindi natin dapat unahin ang mga wants natin, dahil ang WANTS makakapaghintay pero ang NEEDS hindi.”

“Aminado ako before magastos akong tao pero hindi naman kasi tayo pa bata, pa tanda po tayo kaya sana isipin natin lahat ng pag gagastusan natin dahil hindi natin alam may mga responsibilidad tayo sa buhay na dapat pag laanan ng savings.”

“Need natin mag save habang bata pa tayo para pag dumating ang near future hindi tayo sobrang mamomoblema when it comes sa money kasi alam mong nakapag save ka.”
