OFW in UAE Receives Kidney from Wife to Save His Life

The life of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Abu Dhabi was saved after his wife decided to donate her kidney to him.
In September, Rowena Rapada donated her kidney to her OFW husband, Homer, who was in need of a donor after suffering from kidney failure due to a neurogenic bladder issue, reported Suchitra Bajpai Chaudhary for Gulf News.
The OFW’s illness was only discovered by accident when he underwent a routine test in 2011. The illness was detected in its later stage but it wasn’t until 2018 when his kidneys became completely damaged.
By that time, Homer was in need of a kidney donor. Rowena volunteered and underwent tests see if she was eligible to donate. When it was found that she was a match, the procedure was conducted on September 12 at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi.
Homer underwent two procedures – the removal of both of his kidneys and the transplant of Rowena’s kidney to his.
Since the procedure, Homer has recovered and has returned to his job as a staff nurse with SEHA ambulatory health care.
