Discount Sought on Funeral Services for OFWs, Teachers
MANILA: A new bill filed by the Philippine Senator Nancy Binay has sought funeral discount privileges for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and all public school teachers, according to a media report.
“The state recognizes the contribution of overseas Filipino workers to the economy through their remittances. Similarly, the state also recognized the efforts of public school teachers in shaping their youth towards becoming productive and responsible members of this country,” Binay was quoted as saying by Sun Star.
According to Senate Bill 2780, families of OFWs who die because of work-related sickness and injuries and public school teachers of the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education will be given a 20 percent discount on funeral services, the report said.
Binay reportedly said the discount privileges would help improve the plight of Filipino migrant workers and public school teachers.
Any person who violates the proposed law will be slapped a fine of not less than PhP50,000 but not exceeding PhP100,000 and will be jailed for not less than six months but not more than two years for the first violation, the report said.
For any subsequent violation, a fine of not less than PhP100,000 but not exceeding PhP200,000 or imprisonment for not less than two years but not more than six years will be imposed, Sun Star reported.
