Filipino Seafarer Commits Suicide After Being Sacked

SAN FRANCISCO: Seafarer John Gregg Elejan, 31, hanged himself at a crewing office in Manila and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, media reports said.

Elejan was found hanging with a green water hose around his neck at the offices of Status Maritime Corporation, according to a report by Splash247.com.

Elejan, an oiler crew member, had been let go by his firm due to unspecified “bad behaviour,” reported Inquirer.

Recent reports from Swansea University show that seafaring as a career has the second highest rate of suicide in the world after coal mining.
