Filipino Seafarer Commits Suicide After Being Sacked

SAN FRANCISCO: Seafarer John Gregg Elejan, 31, hanged himself at a crewing office in Manila and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, media reports said.

Elejan was found hanging with a green water hose around his neck at the offices of Status Maritime Corporation, according to a report by

Elejan, an oiler crew member, had been let go by his firm due to unspecified “bad behaviour,” reported Inquirer.

Recent reports from Swansea University show that seafaring as a career has the second highest rate of suicide in the world after coal mining.
