Gov’t. Help Sought for OFWs Languishing in Foreign Prisons

MANILA: Family members and friends of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), along with Migrante International, have launched a “Global Day of Action” for OFW victims of human trafficking and those languishing in prisons abroad.
Celia Veloso, the mother of Mary Jane Veloso, who is languishing in Indonesia’s death row after apparently being victimized by a drug mule running syndicate, was quoted as saying by InterAksyon that her daughter keenly wants to come home.
“Especially at this time of the season, having Mary Jane return to us would be a tremendous Christmas present for the family,” Veloso reportedly said at an event held in front of the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) building in Padre Faura, Manila.
“We are praying for justice, for Mary Jane and numerous others who have fallen prey to human traffickers. Former Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila De Lima promised us she would not let go of this case. But it’s going to be election season shortly; she could be too preoccupied by other things.”
Another victim, Editha Dacanay, called for the government’s effort to help her daughter, who is in prison on a murder charge.
Marites Aquino, the mother of Edmar Aquino, who is another name in the long list of victims of human trafficking also sought government assistance for the release of her son from a foreign prison.
