HK Lawmaker’s Comment About Pinay Maids Causes Outrage
MANILA – A Hong Kong lawmaker’s comment about Filipina domestic workers earned the ire of the Pinoy community based there.
According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Executive Councilor Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee’s article on Facebook and her blog criticized international media for only reporting about wrongdoings of employers of domestic workers.
She pointed out the need to focus also on the issue of “Filipino maids being turned into sexual resources for male foreigners.”
The report said the article posted on Ip’s Facebook page and blog has been removed.
Emman Villanueva, spokesman of the Asian Migrants’ Coordinating Body, said in the report that Ip’s statement was very racist “as it is directed to a particular nationality”.
The lawmaker has refused to apologize, stating that what she said were based on complaints she received about maids from friends in the expatriate community.
She however blamed the graphic artist for the “misleading’ visual
picture with the headline “Lots of Filipino maids provide sex services to foreign men?”, that accompanied the Facebook post, the SCMP reported.
