MANILA – The Taiwanese firm which owned the fishing vessel with 13 Filipino crew on board, has turned over the search to Argentinean Search and Rescue Center, almost three months since the ship was reported missing in the Falklands Islands.
Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Hsiang Fu Chun Company has paid the three months salaries of the fishing vessel’s crew. It is also now in the process of claiming the insurance for them.
Baldoz cited the report of Taipei-based Labor Attaché Cynthia Cruz that the Argentinian Navy has dispatched a warship and an ocean patrol vessel for the search.
Uruguay and other neighboring countries in the vicinity are assisting in the search and broadcasting to passing ships to be alert of any situation, Cruz further said in her report.
But since there has been no positive result in the ongoing search, Cruz said the Taiwanese owner of the vessel is now setting into motion the application process for the insurance claim of the missing crew.
“Insurance regulations provide that the claims can be applied in three months,” said Cruz.
Hsiang Fu Chun left a Taiwanese port in January but has been missing since 26 February. The company said the Filipino crew was insured in the Philippines and abroad, and if the claims are in order, families can receive their insurance benefits in a month.
Baldoz assured the families of the missing Filipino crew that the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is ready to provide them the benefits due them as members.
