Pinay Nanny Wins Slavery Case in Canada

REDWOOD CITY, California – A Filipina named only as “PN” in court documents has been awarded more than 55,000 Canadian dollars (around P1.9 million) by British Columbia’s Human Rights Tribunal for Virtual Slavery.

According to the decision, a Hong Kong couple brought PN to Canada in July 2013 to work as a caregiver for their two children.

The husband sexually assaulted the caregiver, while the wife humiliated and abused her in the hotel suite they were staying in while looking for a place to move in Canada.

PN, who was 28 years old at that time, said she was forced to work more than 17 hours a day in Hong Kong, while being paid only $600 Canadian dollars a month.

The Pinay had a chance to escape the abusive employers when she went out to throw the garbage.

The ruling is said to be one of the largest awards in the tribunal’s history.
