MANILA – As the death toll in Saturday’s killer quake in Nepal keeps rising, mute testimony of the most horrifying moments when it began were captured by CCTV.
One scene of a wide, busy road in Kathmandu shows people going about their business, and some vehicles cruising. And then, the scene seems to be shaking, and within seconds a huge gate and wall at the right side of the avenue comes crashing down on the road, pinning down people.
A huge cloud of dust covers the avenue, and people in shock scamper to safety.
Yet another CCTV footage inside a busy restaurant shows people scrambling to reach the door as the place shakes, but the place is shaking so hard, they can barely stand.
All across Nepal, scenes of despair and destruction – but also hope, as survivors are found – abound.
Meanwhile, tents are among the most important means for surviving: the injured are being treated in tents; the survivors are staying in tents; even the international and local media networks are operating from out of tents.
The United Nations has sounded a global call for help, for initially $415 million to help in rescue, retrieval and shelter and feeding operations.
The Philippine Red Cross earlier this week deployed doctors and nurses to help the Nepalese.
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also sent a 7-person team complete with vital equipment, including life detectors that can help check for survivors trapped beneath rubble as deep as 15 feet.
