Joramie Torres, the Filipina domestic helper who suffered abuse in Malaysia, is finally reunited with her parents, GMA News’ Jay Sabale reported on State of the Nation with Jessica Soho on Monday.

Joramie’s parents, Ramon and Josephine, flew to Malaysia where their daughter is recuperating from the wounds and bruises she sustained as a result of the abuse.

Aside from beating her, Joramie said her employer also poured boiling cooking oil on her.

She thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for the chance to meet her parents.

Joramie, a former teacher in the Philippines, is currently staying in a safehouse provided by the Malaysian government which is already looking into her complaint against her Malaysian employer. For physical injuries, the charge was upgraded to human trafficking.

The report said Joramie talked to her parents for four hours. In the video sent by the family, she was seen smiling as she greeted her relatives in the Philippines.

Joramie’s parents were accompanied by Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) head Hans Leo Cacdac and Susan Ople, head of the Blas F. Ople Policy Center, a non-government organization that assists distressed OFWs and their families.

Ramon and Josephine Torres, meanwhile, said they are happy to see that Joramie’s wounds and bruises are starting to heal, and that she has gained weight and already in a joyful mood.

Ramon thanked the Malaysian government for looking into his daughter’s case.

Even Joramie’s agency, Alpha Tomo, promised to help her in her case.

“At this point in time po, napag-usapan ng Malaysian agency at kami, ang Philippine agency, na mag-cooperate and then kumuha ng lawyer para doon sa administrative case na ipa-file namin dun sa employer,” said Edna Osea, owner of Alpha Tomo. — GMA News
